Aadhaar Not Necessary For Bank Accounts, Phones For Now: Supreme Court
New Delhi: Aadhaar will not be mandatory for services like banking, cellphone connections and Tatkal passport till a decision has been taken on the matter, said the Supreme Court, which is hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the validity of the 12-digit Unique Identification number. The order, in effect, indefinitely extends the March 31 deadline to link the Unique Identification number.
The court, however, said Aadhaar will be necessary only for social schemes.
In December, the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar was extended to March 31.
The petitions filed in the top court contend that making Aadhaar linking mandatory for welfare schemes and financial transactions, like getting a loan or filing taxes, violates the constitutional right to privacy
